The President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology concludes that successful science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in both school-based and out-of-school settings combined, will determine whether the United States will remain a leader among nations and be in a position to solve an array of immense and rapidly emerging national challenges in science and technology. Underlying this challenge is the Digital Divide, which serves to broaden and deepen societal class boundaries.   These challenges must be addressed to solve the increasingly complex problems facing modern society.

We're familiar with manifestations of Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities in fluids that exhibit significant velocity shear or boundary differentials. We see this in oceanic tidal and current boundaries, and at much smaller scales, probably inside our own bodies... and even at galactic scales. Still, I'm fascinated to see it in Earth's magnetosphere at scales of 6 Earth radii: KHI in Earth's Magnetosphere

Even a cursory glimpse of this Internet map strikes a remarkable resemblance to the topology of inter-glial connectivity exhibited in neural tissue slices from the cortical regions of mammalian brains. One must wonder whether such a coincidence speaks for an underlying structure in the evolution of information transmission and processing structures: Chaos and Predictability of Internet Transmission Times

Hierarchies of information processing structures are being revealed in the human brain: The Human Connectome Project.

White Matter Fibers measured from diffusion spectral imaging (DSI). Fibers are color-coded by direction: red = left-right, green = anterior-posterior, blue = ascending-descending (RGB=XYZ).

For example, differences in the structural connectome of the human brain find that male brains are structured to facilitate connectivity between perception and coordinated action, whereas female brains are designed to facilitate communication between analytical and intuitive processing modes.

Connectome analysis has also shown global vulnerability of brain networks to injuries which disrupt connectivity and lower integrative properties of brain networks. This presents new avenues for clinical outcome prediction following brain injury by relating lesion locations to connectivity core disruption and implications for recovery.

The International Space Station (ISS). A Systems Engineering exemplar: 3.3 million lines of software code on the ground support 1.8 million lines of flight software code. In the U.S. segment alone 1.5 million lines of flight software code run on 44 computers communicating via 100 data networks transferring 400,000 signals.
